In his closing remarks during the final presidential debate of 1980, Ronald Reagan famously asked the American people: "Are you better off now than you were four years ago?"Almost forty years on of a world dominated by the ideas and policies Reagan supported it is fair to ask an altered form of the question: Are we better off than we were forty years ago?
